Main focus: community sustainability

Purpose: To work towards our common vision of a green, healthy, and engaged community. To be a strong voice for sustainability. To make it easier for citizens to be involved, make a positive difference, and have a meaningful voice. To connect like-minded people and groups so they can share resources and work together. To be a resource for community sustainability. To advocate for change, to research best practices, to educate the public, local groups and decision makers, and to act.

Work in the community:

Advocacy: advocate for community sustainability and meaningful citizen engagement in municipal decisions and policies, and assist others to do so as well. We make public submissions for specific decisions, and give regular updates to City Council.

Research: research best practices and make this information available to others.

Educate: through our newsletter, public events, submissions, and discussions/workshops.

Act: to make positive change. We partner with other organizations on community projects.

Current work includes: a series of ‘unconferences’ bringing knowledgeable grassroots input to EarthCare Sudbury’s Local Action Plan; collaborating on efforts to improve lake water quality by restricting phosphorous, and improving air-quality by reducing idling; partnering on an edition of the poetry e-zine Terra North/Nord based on local photographs from a CLS photo contest; ‘Smart Growth’ toolkits for elementary and high school students.

Programs or services offered: Membership(for individuals or community groups); bi-weekly newsletter. We can assist you or your group keep informed of local issues and events, find resources, connect to others, create a vision of revitalization, speak out, or navigate the planning process.

The CLS connects with these and other local groups to share information and resources, work towards common goals, and assist others to do the same.
